Shane Tyler Milson in the redwood forests of the Mendocino, California harvesting wild turkey tail mushrooms.
Making the drive up along the pacific coast highway from Venice, Los Angeles to Mendocino is one of my favourite migratory paths on the adventure of mushroom foraging. The brisk ocean-scented air entrenching the entire dense dark redwood forest makes for some of the most refreshing & meditative experiences I've encountered.
This is shot in late Fall. I've found Turkey Tail mushrooms (Trametes versicolor / Coriolus) to be abundant during any season.
"What can you use turkey tail mushroom for?"
Brewing in hot water extractions for 30 mins + (longer the better) to break the cell-wall exposing the nutrient dense profile rich in antioxidants.
"What does a turkey tail mushroom look like?"
As you'd imagine, the name is indicative of the vibe & look. If you can visualize a fanned out turkey's tail with pigments of blue & impressive vibrancy, that's what you're hunting for.
Look for white tipped edges, multi-coloration (blue, red, yellow, orange, browns), soft velvet feel & underside spore base is thousands of micro-cells (gill-less).
