In Washington State, she’s made history as the most elected Korean American public official, now serving her eighth term in the state legislature.
From landmark legislation like Kimchi Day to tax exemptions for taekwondo academies, her work has helped write Korean identity into state law — all while mentoring a rising wave of Korean American leaders.

Today, in an exclusive conversation, we sit down with Washington State Representative Cindy Ryu — to talk about power, policy, and what’s next for Korean American political influence in the U.S. A big welcome.


1. You’ve served eight terms in the Washington State House. What first pulled you into politics, and what’s kept up voter trust in you in coming back?

2. As a Korean American lawmaker, what does being a “bridge” between the U.S. and Korea really mean to you? Are there any standout policies that show that role in action?
