Take a walk into any restaurant next time you’re passing during lunch hour and have a look at the people who are hosting a luncheon for business. There’s usually one or two hosts and their clients.

Now do this. Watch their body language. Watch how they are leading the conversation and watch how they are the perfect host.

Do you want to be that person? Now if your answer is yes, here are few tips to take note. Our 5 rules of business luncheon etiquette.

1: Never, ever talk with your mouth full. Chewing your food while talking affects your articulation. Your customer will find it difficult to understand what you’re saying and will, no doubt, end up in an unpleasant routine of asking you to keep repeating yourself.

2: Come prepared with a few casual, non-business topics in mind. We know it’s all about business but you must build trust and rapport in the relationship. So throw some casual topics as a starter. A good host knows how to lighten the mood before getting down to business.

3: Always be kind to the wait staff and know what happens. Everyone likes to do business with nice, professional people, who know how to have good etiquette to everyone around them. Don’t treat anyone poorly, you never know who is watching, and who will be your next customer.

4: Know your lunch partner’s business. You just made an appointment with a prospect so what’s next? Research their business. When you are knowledgeable about your prospect’s nature of business, you’ll eventually be both engaged in good conversation flow, and your customer will be very impressed that you’ve taken the time to understand what they do.

5: Put some thought into choosing the right restaurant. Consider what’s most convenient for your customer. If you’ve been ‘thinking’ that the fanciest restaurant will contribute to 100% victory - think again! Some clients are more likely to value your conversation and outcomes, and what you can offer than being impressed to the place you just treated them to.

Now, remember, don’t try so hard to impress. BE NATURAL. Always put your customers business, interest and convenience as your topmost consideration. Are you ready to take on your next luncheon meeting?
