Locomotive consist:
WDTX 1400 - Siemens SC-44 - Cascades

This crossing is located on the BNSF New Westminster Subdivision.

Bell sequence: Bells ring until gates rise.

Horn setting: Quiet zone.

Far signal: A Siemens base, a Siemens gate mechanism with RECO LED gate lights, 3 pairs of Safetran 12x24" lights with Dialight Ball LEDs and a General Signals Type 3 electronic bell.

Near signal: A Siemens base, a Siemens gate mechanism with RECO LED gate lights, 3 pairs of Safetran 12x24" lights with Dialight Ball LEDs and a General Signals Type 3 electronic bell.

On March 12th, 2024, I spent that afternoon railfanning. I went down to White Rock later that day in hopes of re-recording this crossing with a southbound Amtrak Cascades train. I didn’t have to wait long before the crossing activated, and this Seattle-bound Amtrak Cascades train came rolling through with one of two Talgo 8 trainsets led by a Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotive.

This crossing is certainly one that is quite recognizable based on its famous location. It’s had a long history to it as well. The Great Northern completed its railroad line from Washington State to Vancouver, BC in 1904. This particular crossing, has seen many changes throughout the years too. Originally, the crossing was passive until sometime in the 1930s or so, when the GN installed a bell-only signal featuring what appeared to be a WRRS Locomotive-style bell. Then in the 1950s, the signal was replaced with a pair of conventional crossing signals featuring Griswold Type B 8” lights as well as a Griswold mechanical bell. The signal on the nearside was mounted on a relay pedestal too. Then in the 1970s or 1980s, the BN replaced the signals with more modern gateless signals featuring Safetran 12x20” incandescent lights as well as a Safetran mechanical bell. Not much changed afterwards until the 2000s, when the Safetran bell was replaced with a GS Type 2 E-Bell by BNSF. In 2010 or 2011, the Safetran 12x20” incandescent lights with replaced with Safetran 12x24” GS LED lights. Finally, around 2019, this crossing, along with 7 other crossings in the area, were upgraded to the current modern BNSF Siemens signals in preparation of the implementation of the 24/7 quiet zone, which came in effect in early 2020.
