ICASA 2025: HIV Modelling Consortium: From Models to Action: How HIV Modelling Strengthens Policy Decisions in sub-Saharan Africa
Details
Overview of session: Through this satellite event, the HIV Modelling Consortium seeks to highlight how modelling results may be used to improve policy and initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa. Mathematical modelling is widely used, but policymakers often face challenges in understanding the results and using them to make decisions in the real world. This session will show how mathematical models have used epidemiological, behavioural, and cost data to help set national strategic goals, figure out how to spend money, and determine which interventions to focus on. The panel brings together diverse voices, including a senior HIV mathematical modeller, a health economist, a donor agency representative, a community advocate, and the head of a National AIDS Program from sub-Saharan Africa. They will all talk about how modelling can assist in making responses to HIV more important, fair, and effective, especially now that funding for HIV treatment and prevention programs is changing. The satellite aims to link mathematical modelling with policy relevance, demonstrating that mathematical modelling is a crucial tool for predicting the future of HIV prevention and treatment in the region.
