Invited my dad on an exploring tour across Bulgaria. I was there to film mostly drone footage of Brutalist / Socialist Modernist architecture but also captured a lot of our exploring on a normal camera. My dad was in a lot of these videos so I put together this collage for him. I’ve included a few of the drone shots I was filming but the rest were made for another project.
Over 2 weeks went into the research and prep for this trip. Many of the sites aren’t listed on modern maps and took time to locate. Many were walled off and needed alternative entry. In 2016 a law was proposed in Bulgaria to make public displays of communist symbols illegal but it never passed. However as we travelled through, many were defaced or torn down.
I have no interest in the politics of these places, I’m there only for the aesthetics, the textures, the exploring, the moment you spot your pyramid sticking out of an urban jungle.
