Lesson 90 – To do in advance… V(TE) + OKU

Описание: The V(TE) + OKU conjugation uses the te-form of a volitional verb and the verb OKU, which means “to put,” as an auxiliary verb. V(TE) + OKU means to do something in advance for a future benefit or convenience. The te-form of the causative form of a verb can also combine with OKU, to form V(SASETE) + OKU, which means to leave someone or something in its current state (e.g., continue doing the action). V(SASETE) + OKU is only used on social subordinates. Both V(TE) + OKU and V(SASETE) + OKU can combine with other conjugations and modalities to add nuance and meaning.

Examples:
• I’ll open the door in advance (so people can come in later).　ドアを開けておきます。
• You don’t need to make advance reservations (because that restaurant is never full).　 予約を取っておかんかくてもいいです。
• Let’s leave the kids playing for a while.　 子供達をしばらく遊ばせておきましょう。
