Fighting disinformation and 'fake news' online requires more than crucial measures like fact-checking, government regulation, and corporate reform. Especially in the midst of a global pandemic, it requires a sensitivity to human behaviour and to the ways disinformation can gratify and reassure us, confirming our biases and feeding our sense of exception.
In this conversation, members of the Disinformation and Media Literacy Special Interest Group (DML SIG) at the University of Cambridge speak with partners of the Dutch team DROG about conceiving disinformation as a virus and devising free online games like https://www.getbadnews.com and https://www.goviralgame.com to inoculate players against it. Melisa Basol, Rory Finnin, Ruurd Oosterwood, Rivka Otten, Jon Roozenbeek, and Sander van der Linden also discuss the translation of these games into world languages and consider the question of media literacy for both children and older communities.
