In a state of meditation our brain operates in theta frequency, which are long and constant brain waves. When we are focused on the external world we are in beta frequency, which are short erratic brainwaves. There is one step in between, alpha frequency. Yoga and pranayama are excellent tools to go into alpha state, from where meditation is much more attainable.
