Cut Vinyl Signs are losing favor over just being printed. However there are many instances where cut vinyl is superior to a printed graphic, despite its daunting task of weeding complex vector paths.
I hate to see backlit signs that are printed where areas need to block out or mask light. Doesn't matter how many times you go over it in ink, there just isn't a substitute for real black vinyl sometimes. Faded colors just look bad and amateurish. Know your tools and techniques and provide the best sign to your client. Don't always look for the easiest or cheapest way out.
