The Interim Constitution
Adoption of the final Constitution
8th May 1996, The Constitutional assembly adopted and submitted a final version of the text to the Constitutional Court for certification
The Constitutional Court declined to certify the submitted text, concluding that the proposed final text did not fully comply with the requirements of the 34 principles.
11th October 1996, The assemble adopted and submitted an amended version of the final text and referred it to the Constitutional Court for certification.
The Constitutional Court concluded that the text complied with the 34 pre-determined constitutional principles
10th December 1996, President Mandela signed the text into law in Sharpeville
4th February 1997, the new Constitution came into effect
The post-apartheid legal order became a fully-fledged reality
