Rethinking rewards in horse training: Why less stimulation supports the horse’s nervous system and helps the brain process and retain learning more effectively.
We often think a good reward must be something extra – a treat, praise, scratching, or other feel-good gestures. But in the horse’s brain, this “extra” can actually interfere with learning – especially right after a meaningful moment.
In this video, I explain why a simple pause – doing nothing – might be the most effective reward of all. It’s not about withholding, but about offering space:
✅ for the nervous system to settle
✅ for new connections to form
✅ for the brain to consolidate new information
This subtle shift in how we view rewards can bring more clarity to the learning process and help motivation arise naturally.
