Kudditta Mettadavu (Kuthithu Mettadavu), with Kudditta or Kuthithu meaning jump in English. This adavu incorporates a subtle jump onto the balls of the feet, followed by a strike. The upper body has a combination of arm and torso movements. This adavu is characterised by the dancer remaining in place, with limited movements forward, backward or laterally.

Adavus

This video series can serve as a reference guide to students, teachers, and parents, emphasising the importance of adavus, which form the foundational building blocks in Bharatanatyam. This home video series is designed to provide a mirroring experience for students practicing Bharatanatyam in the comfort of their own homes.

As students progress, the speed can be increased from 1st speed onwards to 2nd and 3rd speed.

Daily practice of adavus holds immense importance in the journey of Bharatanatyam. Consistent and dedicated practice allows dancers to refine their technique, develop muscle memory, and improve overall proficiency. By committing to regular practice, dancers can gradually perfect their adavus, ensuring precision, grace, and fluidity in their performances. Daily practice also instills discipline, perseverance, and a deep connection to the art form, enabling dancers to unlock their full potential and truly embody the essence of Bharatanatyam.

Background

Thattadavu is a term derived from the Tamil language, which is widely used in the context of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form from South India. The word "Thattadavu" consists of two parts: "Thatta" and "Adavu."

The term "Thatta" refers to the action of striking the feet on the ground. It signifies the rhythmic patterns created by the footwork in Bharatanatyam. The precise footwork is a prominent aspect of this dance form and adds vibrancy and dynamics to the performance.

The word "Adavu" refers to a basic unit or module of movement in Bharatanatyam. Adavus are structured sequences of steps and movements that form the building blocks of the dance form. Each Adavu has specific characteristics, footwork patterns, hand gestures, and rhythmic elements.

Combining these two elements, Thattadavu represents a specific set of movements and footwork patterns that involve striking the feet on the ground. Thattadavus are integral to Bharatanatyam and play a crucial role in developing the dancer's technique, coordination, rhythm, and expressive capabilities.

Through the practice of Thattadavus, dancers master the intricate footwork, body postures, and hand gestures that are essential in Bharatanatyam. These steps provide a strong foundation for the more complex compositions and choreographies in the repertoire of Bharatanatyam.
