COURSE - 17th century ornamentation / diminution
Classical music improvisation is often taught and performed by piano players. Historical sources also often come from keyboardists. Jacob van Eyck is a notable exception, leaving us with more than 150 pieces, most of which were originally improvised and then notated in the 2nd half of the 17th century. His variations are on well-known melodies of the time, leaving us with a documentation of favourite melodies of the time as well.
I put together a course using original 17th century melodies van Eyck used in his publications. Step by step you learn small ornamental ideas, which put together become powerful tools to learn to improvise. Experimenting with the original melodies makes it all the more interesting to see what van Eyck did with them himself! Find out more in this video.
