We speak with those of Wisconsin’s Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, as well as non-tribal members, who were instrumental in efforts to successfully change the name of a lake that has long been rendered a racial slur of Native women. It was very important to many of the Band that this natural resource is named in a respectful, non-offensive way.
But, as we learn in a report brought to us by Producer Tsanavi Spoonhunter (Descendant of Northern Paiute, Lakota, Northern Arapaho Tribe) and Cinematographer/Editor Christian Lee Collins, it was a difficult task to execute for a number of reasons. One being is the lake resides off the tribe’s land.
