In this next edition of the ZTF science vlog, Kostas Tsalapatas from the Oskar Klein Center at the University of Stockholm describes a very peculiar thermonuclear supernova. Such transients are very common and they behave in a very predictable way, yet this specific supernova exhibited a very prominent second peak in its light curve, while its spectrum revealed a circumstellar material around it that is poor in hydrogen and helium - something that is unexpected for this class of cosmic objects.
These observations challenge conventional theories of how thermonuclear supernovae are formed and remind us how rich in surprises the universe is.
The paper "A thermonuclear supernova interacting with hydrogen- and helium-deficient circumstellar material: SN 2020aeuh as a SN Ia-CSM-C/O?" is published in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal at https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/pdf...
This video is part of the ZTF science vlog series produced by the Zwicky Transient Facility - a research partnership that operates a robotic telescope with a wide-field that scans the night sky every few nights in search of transient or moving objects. ZTF has revolutionized the field of transient astronomy and has paved the way for the Rubin Observatory which is the next generation of wide-field telescope to study the dynamic universe.
