Описание: I sat down (over Google Meets) with two African immigrants who have been living in Canada collectively for over a decade.

They gave me a fresh perspective about Canada’s proposed new immigration policy, recently announced by prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau, in a nearly seven-minute YouTube post stated the challenges of immigration and the plans to curb it in the next few years — his exact words were to “close the taps”. His speech was perfectly curated, with graphs and charts — a master work of a professional video editor, I must say.

But politicians are typically known to speak with a kind of vagueness, that often sees people as statistical numbers. His speech, in my opinion, lacked the human experience that contextualizes it and gives it substance.

This missing aspect of what prime minister Trudeau’s speech failed to convey was perfectly addressed during my conversation with these two gentlemen.

My interview guests were well informed about the issues, not just because they were living it every day but because they had deliberately given this topic the rational thought that it deserved.

One of their strong arguments was that they felt that although it was unfair to blame immigrants for the government's failed immigration policies that have resulted in the current economic problems, it was logical for Canadian natives to feel the way they felt.

To them, these folks who were feeling the economic pinch from the fallout of the government’s immigration “mistakes” — as prime minister Trudeau described it — needed a scapegoat to vent their frustration, even if it was unfair.

They informed me that the native Canadians blamed all immigrants for their problems and could care less whether they came in legally or not. All immigrants are placed in the same bucket.

Even with this reality, these African immigrants, who have now become Canadian citizens themselves do not view this behavior as racist. Instead, they believe this attitude to be logical and justify this as a natural human reaction to pocketbook issues.
