In 1904, Japan laid siege to Port Arthur, the heavily fortified Russian naval base in Manchuria. What began as a swift assault turned into one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the early twentieth century. For nearly five months, Japanese troops stormed the hills under relentless artillery fire while the Russian defenders fought from tunnels and concrete forts. Tens of thousands died in mud, smoke, and disease before the port finally fell in January 1905. The siege shocked the world, marking the first time an Asian power defeated a major European empire — and forever changing the balance of global war.
