In this Episode we take a mammoth challenge on the mighty Lough Derg!

We will try shore fishing on this 179km long shoreline, with depths of 36m in areas of the lake, this lake is predominantly fished by boat 🚤 🎣

Carved by ancient glaciers over 12,000 years ago, Lough Derg is a place where nature and history flow together along the mighty River Shannon. 🧊

Stretching nearly 40 km (25 miles) and 179 in total between counties Tipperary, Clare, and Galway, this vast freshwater lake holds stories beneath its waters and along its quiet shores. 🗺️


As the Ice Age retreated, meltwater filled the deep glacial basin, creating one of Ireland’s largest lakes.

Today, Lough Derg reaches depths of around 36 metres (118 feet), its surface reflecting changing skies, rolling hills, and centuries of Irish life.

Scattered across the lake are islands steeped in history — most famously Holy Island (Inis Cealtra), home to a 10th-century round tower and the remains of an early Christian monastery. Vikings once travelled these waters, monks prayed on its shores, and generations have lived, fished, and journeyed along its banks.
Beneath the surface, Lough Derg is alive with wildlife. Anglers are drawn here for its wild brown trout, powerful pike, Atlantic salmon, perch, roach, bream, and rudd.

The lake is known across Ireland for its rich fishing waters and natural beauty.

Whether it’s mist rising in the early morning, boats drifting across calm water, or the sound of wind through lakeside trees, Lough Derg is more than a lake — it’s a living piece of Ireland’s story.
