Prashant Kishor has pulled off a major political upset in Bihar by winning the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, ending the BJP’s three-decade hold over one of its strongest seats. Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by more than 19,000 votes, delivering the first electoral victory of his political career and the first-ever win for his Jan Suraaj Party. The bypoll was necessitated after senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. Bihar BJP chief Nitin Nabin called the result unexpected and said the party would review the defeat. For Kishor, the victory marks a major breakthrough after Jan Suraaj failed to win a seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
