That was my very first question when I saw this painting.
You know, sometimes just a single brushstroke, a half-centimeter shade of color, is enough to change the destiny of a painting.

This work has enchanted me.
I discovered it by chance: the artist is Brendan Fitzpatrick, who lives in Hong Kong.
The piece is a self-portrait.
And from the reflection of his face emerges a curl, a small whirl of hair that seems to escape from the painting itself.
That detail, tiny yet perfect, obsesses me.

The spatula, like a small trowel, is more than just a tool: if the mason builds walls, the painter builds himself.
It is the symbol of the hand that creates and, at the same time, of the hand that understands.

The canvas, still white, does not yet contain his face—it is not the usual portrait of the artist.
It is the shiny spatula that, by chance, offers him his first glimpse of himself.
It is not the painter who looks at the work, but the work that unexpectedly returns his image to him, like a sudden mirror.
In that instant, the artist does not recognize himself as the one painting the self-portrait, but as the one who sees his own reflection for the first time.
It is a moment of revelation and disorientation at once: like a child discovering his image in a mirror, or like Narcissus, lost in the charm of his own reflection.

And then that curl, protruding, breaking the perfection of the surface, escaping the boundary of form—as if the work itself could not contain the full presence of its creator.
To reflect upon oneself and, at the same time, become one with the reflection until reality and image can no longer be distinguished—that is the profound meaning of that curl.

Nietzsche saw the artist as a being who creates worlds, a kind of small god.
Yet, the moment he identifies completely with his creation, he risks losing himself.
It often happens to artists—especially the greatest ones—to identify so intensely with what they create that, if only for an instant, they lose their connection with the world around them.

In that thin boundary between the work and its maker, between illusion and truth, lies the very essence of art: the desire to recognize oneself and, at the same time, to lose oneself in the image that reflects back.

In the end, Fitzpatrick does not portray himself — he discovers himself.
The white canvas is not a space to fill, but a mirror waiting to reveal a face.
And that face is not born of color, but of chance — from the sudden reflection of a spatula that becomes an oracle.
In that moment, the artist ceases to be the one who creates and becomes the one who witnesses his own birth within his creation.
There, suspended between light and matter, between the world and its image, Fitzpatrick understands:
it is not he who looks at the reflection — it is the reflection that looks at him.
