As a student, Géricault studied English sporting art under the mentorship of French painter Carle Vernet, refining his exceptional ability to depict animal movement. He also mastered the principles of classicist figure construction and composition under academician Pierre-Narcisse, Baron Guérin. His influence extended to fellow student Eugène Delacroix, who found inspiration in Géricault’s work, which became a significant foundation for his own artistic evolution. Géricault's most renowned masterpiece, 'The Raft of the Medusa' (c. 1819), portrays the harrowing aftermath of a contemporary French shipwreck. The painting vividly depicts the survivors’ desperate ordeal aboard a raft, where many succumbed to starvation before their dramatic rescue at sea.
