MEDIBANK was Australia's first national health insurance scheme, which was introduced in 1975. Prior to MEDIBANK, access to healthcare services in Australia was limited by a person's ability to pay for medical treatment. MEDIBANK aimed to provide all Australians with access to healthcare services regardless of their ability to pay.
Under MEDIBANK, Australians were entitled to receive basic medical treatment and hospital services free of charge. The scheme was funded by a 1.35% levy on taxable income, which was used to cover the cost of providing healthcare services.
The introduction of MEDIBANK was a significant milestone in Australia's healthcare system and demonstrated the government's commitment to providing access to essential healthcare services to all Australians. In 1984, MEDIBANK was renamed as Medicare, and it remains Australia's national health insurance scheme to this day
