‘Quite unusual’: Analyst on Timor-Leste’s legal case against Myanmar junta

Myanmar’s junta on Sunday (Feb 15) expelled Timor-Leste’s top representative in the country, ordering the charge d’affaires to leave within seven days. This came after a rights group said Dili has opened a legal case against the Myanmar military for war crimes, in what is said to be a landmark move against a fellow member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Susannah Patton, deputy research director and programme director for Southeast Asia at Sydney-based think-tank Lowy Institute, tells CNA’s Asia First that Timor-Leste will “represent one extreme end” of views on Myanmar among ASEAN members.
