Letter to NCERT

Respected Madam/Sir,
We recently witnessed an unusual chain of events following the publication of Grade 8 Social science book by NCERT. It drew sharp criticism for the inclusion of a chapter on judiciary that contained details on corruption in judiciary among other issues. Following suo motto action by the Supreme Court, copies of the said book have been withdrawn. The content that was considered unworthy of the reputation of the highest court of land was considered unsuitable for our children.
I would like to draw your attention to one more piece of such content in your books that doesn’t go well with the dignity of many of the sections of our society. Last time when NCERT published a new book for Grade 7, the said book contained references to Varna-Jati vyavastha. The references categorically use the term ‘lower castes’. Such phraseology goes against the idea of social justice.
What message do we intend to convey to our next generation? Should they address some castes as ‘lower’ castes and others as ‘upper’ castes? Upper & lower castes are the notions created by divisive forces of the society. We must not use the language used by them.
The better alternative could be, ‘the so-called lower castes’ and ‘the so-called upper castes’, so that children learn that no caste is lower or upper by itself. It’s some evil forces that make them lower or upper. In the absence of those words called ‘the so-called’, we are compelling our children to believe that they have to see others through the lens of caste hierarchy.
Let’s keep our children out of this madness. They don’t need to inherit this. They learn what we teach them. The language that they receive is the language that they are going to use. That language is going to create lifelong impressions in their innocent minds. The language should conform to our constitutional values of justice, equality & fraternity.
We sincerely hope that appropriate changes are made in the content of the books. A seemingly small change has the potential to bring about significant changes in how we live together.
