Описание: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yumnam Khemchand is set to become the next Chief Minister of Manipur after being elected leader of the BJP legislative party. The decision was taken at a meeting of party MLAs held in Delhi.

Sources indicate that the new Manipur government will have two Deputy Chief Ministers. Senior Kuki leader and former minister Nemcha Kipgen is likely to be appointed Deputy Chief Minister, while Govind Das is expected to take charge as the state’s Home Minister.

The leadership change follows the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9 last year amid continuing ethnic violence in Manipur. His exit came after mounting pressure, including the threat of a no-confidence motion, after a BJP ally withdrew support citing the government’s failure to contain the violence.

In the 60-member Manipur Assembly, the BJP has 37 MLAs. Its allies include the Naga People’s Front with five members and the JD(U) with one MLA. The opposition has 16 seats.

Yumnam Khemchand is a senior BJP leader and a two-time MLA from Singjamei constituency, elected in 2017 and 2022. He served as Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022. After the 2022 elections, he was inducted into the cabinet and handled key departments including municipal administration, housing development, rural development, panchayati raj and education.
