Описание: Hallgrímskirkja is the main landmark of Reykjavík and the highest church in Iceland, at 74 metres (244 ft).

It is named eftir the 17th century clergyman and poet Hallgrímur Pétursson. State architect Guðjón Samúelsson designed it in the semblance of Iceland's volcanic and glacial landscape, the hexagonal columns echoing the trap rocks found throughout the country.

It took 41 years to build the church, from 1945 to 1986, though the steeple and wings were completed in 1974, on the 1100th anniversary of the Icelandic settlement, as recorded in the annals of the first settlers.

The church is also an observation tower, offering a breathtaking view of Reykjavík as well as the mountains and coastline surrounding Earth's northernmost capital.
