U.S. congressman visits 5-year-old in ICE custody, demands his release | ABS-CBN News

Описание: A U.S. congressman posted a video calling on Wednesday (28 January) calling for the release of five‑year‑old Liam Conejo Ramos, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Ramos was detained alongside his Ecuadorian father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, in Minneapolis on January 20 and transferred to a family detention facility in Dilley, south Texas.

During a visit to the Dilley detention centre, Congressman Joaquin Castro checked on the pair's welfare, along with that of approximately 1,100 other detainees currently held at the facility.

Castro said no five year-old child should be held in detention in the way Ramos has been. He also mentioned there was a two month old baby who had also been detained.

The congressman also posted a photo of the boy and his father that was taken during Castro's visit

Identification of the man and boy matched features from file images.

Reuters was not able to confirm the date of footage.

An attorney representing the family, Marc Prokosch, said the Ecuadorean boy and his father were both in the country legally as asylum applicants.

The Department of Homeland Security said Liam's father was in the country illegally but did not provide details.

Images circulated showing Liam, wearing a blue hat and a Spider‑Man backpack, watching as masked agents took his father from the driveway of their home after the pair returned from preschool.

Officers then attempted to use the boy to lure his mother out of the house, at least two witnesses said.

The detentions form part of U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown, which has deployed about 3,000 federal law enforcement officers to the Minneapolis area, where people have been on edge since an immigration officer shot and killed Renee Good, 37, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, on January 7.
