Ep. 8 of "Exploring Ladakh" series as we visit Diskit Monastery, the largest Buddhist Monastery in the Nubra Valley.
Founded in the 14th century, Diskit is the oldest and largest monastery in the valley. Perched at an altitude of 3,144m (10,315ft), its strategic location offers breathtaking views of the Nubra Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. Looking down into the valley one has a striking view of the 106ft tall gilded statue of Jampa (Maitreya) Buddha.
Historically, Diskit Monastery lay along the ancient trade route connecting Ladakh to Yarkand (modern-day Xinjiang, China) which ran through the Shyok and Nubra Valleys.
The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect and is a sub-gompa of the famous Thikse Monastery near Leh. Inside the main prayer hall, you’ll find a stunning statue of Cho Rinpoche (Crowned Buddha), a serene symbol of Buddhism's rich traditions.
Adding to its cultural significance, the lamas at Diskit Monastery run a school where both traditional Buddhist teachings and modern subjects like computers and English are taught. This blend of ancient and modern makes Diskit Monastery a fascinating place to visit for travelers seeking culture, history, and spirituality in Ladakh.
