Thousands of enthusiasts packed into Brands Hatch for Round 5 of the 1986 World Sportscar Championship. Most came to see if Jaguar could again defeat the Porsches as they had done on British soil earlier in the season. World Champions Derek Bell and Hans Stuck were forced to drive an unfamiliar Joest-Rothmans 956B, but were unlikely to yield to any extra pressure exerted by Derek Warwick and Jean-Louis Schlesser in the Jaguar XJR6 or a similar attempt by their team-mates Eddie Cheever and Gianfranco Brancatelli in the 286 model.
