The first women's Olympic marathon took place at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games and it was the USA's Joan Benoit who took the events first ever gold medal.
Prior to the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games, the women's marathon had never featured in the modern Olympics. It was also seldom run earlier in the century mainly due to health fears.
After concerns had been raised at the Amsterdam 1928 Games, the longest distance available for women's athletics had varied from 100m to 800m up to the Moscow 1980 Games.
At the Los Angeles Olympics, however the longest race of them all was installed into the 1984 programme as well as the 1500m, 3000m and the 400m hurdles.
And on the burning street of L.A., it was American athlete Joan Benoit who took the inaugural Olympic gold medal, leaving fellow favourites Grete Waitz-Andersen from Norway and Rosa Mota from Portugal to take silver and bronze, respectively.
