Ernest John Moeran (1894-1950): String Quartet No 2 in E flat major
Apart from his cello concerto, little is heard of Moeran’s music today. The second son of an Anglo-Irish clergyman, Moeran was one of the last 20th century British composers particularly influenced by folk-song. His music is imbued with folk influences and seems to share some of the characteristics with that of Vaughan Williams, Warlock and Delius. But by the late 1920s this folksy romantic style was already becoming regarded in Britain and somewhat passé and old-fashioned. From 1925 to 1928,
Moeran shared a cottage with fellow-composer Peter Warlock but the bohemian lifestyle and heavy drinking during this time interrupted his creativity and probably sowed some of the seeds that would blight his later life.
Moeran (known as Jack to his friends) composed the second string quartet during 1922-1923, shortly after completing the first one. For some reason, he didn’t attempt to get the work published and years later, the manuscript was found among the composer’s papers by his widow after his death. There are two movements and the first has a charming pastoral quality with reminders of Irish folk dance. The second movement is made up of several contrasting sections in which the viola is given plenty of solo opportunities. Some of the lyrical folk-like melodies bring Delius to mind. A lively jiglike section sounds distinctly Irish and eventually leads to a beautiful prayer-like viola solo accompanied by soft strings. The movement is full of drive, fantasy and magical moments which are a
testimony to Moeran’s musical creativity.
