Story Behind Bhogi Festival
'Makara Sankranthi' is the major and longest festival for Hindus. It is called 'longest' because it is celebrated for a minimum of 3 days and the festivities continue with loads of activities like social gatherings, cock fights, bull competitions and many more.
Of the 3 days the first day is "Bhogi" Festival which has huge importance in multiple perspectives i.e. spiritual, scientific, religious and practical. On this day people lit a bonfire and
throws all useless and waste things in their home. This practice has both scientific and spiritual perspective.
Jujebi Fruits (Regu Kayalu in Telugu) have a great significance on this day. Jujebi Fruits are considered to be gift from Lord Sri Vishnu and they are allowed to fall on male kids from the place "Brahmanadi" from where tehy are allowed to flow freely. This practice is called "Bhogi Pallu".
In villages oxen and cows are adorned with colorful clothes, colors and other apt ornaments made of plastic and other metals. Such embellished beautified oxen come to every house in the village and people receive them with utmost respect and pray to them. Called as "Gangiredlu" or "Gangiredhlu" in Telugu it is a famous folk ritual being passed on to generations for ages.
