Nigeria currently has 18 registered political parties. Notable amongst them are the ruling party, the all progressives' congress APC and the main opposition party, the people Democratic Party PDP. However, political alignments and realignments before the last general election have brought to the fore two other political parties claiming to be the needed third force to consolidate party politics in the country.
While the Labour Party LP gained momentum during the last election due to the emergence of former Anambra state governor Peter Obi as it's a presidential candidate, the new Nigeria people's party NNPP was able to make some good showing especially in Kano believed to be the stronghold of its presidential candidate Rabiu Musa kwankwaso.
