Why do some phrases stick in your mind for years, while others disappear the moment they’re spoken?
In classical rhetoric, the answer often comes down to style.
Style is the third of Aristotle’s Five Canons of Rhetoric, and it explains how ideas are expressed once they’ve been discovered and organized. After invention identifies what to say and arrangement determines the structure, style shapes the language that carries the message to an audience.
In classical rhetorical theory, style refers to the choices speakers make about wording, imagery, rhythm, and tone. These elements determine how clearly ideas are understood and how powerfully they are remembered. Metaphors create vivid mental images. Rhythm and repetition make phrases easier to recall. Tone signals attitude and helps audiences interpret meaning.
Throughout history, many of the most famous lines in public speech have endured because of style. Language that is clear, concrete, and memorable travels farther — and lasts longer — than language that is vague or forgettable.
In this video, we explore how rhetorical style works, why language choices influence persuasion, and how effective communicators shape ideas so audiences can understand them, remember them, and repeat them.
Because persuasion isn’t only about having good ideas.
It’s also about expressing those ideas in language that people remember.
This video is part of the Five Canons of Rhetoric series on Reclaiming Rhetoric, where we explore the classical framework that has shaped persuasive communication for over two thousand years.
