A new poll by Politico and The Citrin Center has found that California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is the top choice of 25% of California's Democratic voters in the 2028 Democratic primary, leading all prospective candidates, including 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, who is supported by 19% of the state's Democrats. The poll follows former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and New Jersey U.S. Sen. Cory Booker. The poll was taken from 1,445 registered California voters. Both Newsom and Harris, who are both Democrats, believe winning their home state would be critical to secure the Democratic nomination in 2028.
