At 81 years old, I stopped asking God for things — and started just being with Him.
For most of my life, prayer was a transaction. I brought Him my lists, my worries, my bargains, and my fears. I thought faith meant saying the right words and asking for the right outcomes. When my husband died and the words stopped coming, I thought my faith had failed me.
What I discovered instead was something quieter — and far more powerful.
This is a story about moving from performance to presence. About realizing that love — whether with God, a spouse, or a child — isn’t about managing outcomes. It’s about companionship. About sitting in the garden without a script. About facing fear, illness, grief, and doubt without trying to negotiate your way out of them.
I learned that peace doesn’t come from getting what you ask for.
It comes from knowing you’re not alone while you’re asking.
