During the takeaway many golfers tell themselves "I suck the club inside" meaning the club is "inside" the plane during the first few feet of the swing. Actually golfers THINK they are taking it inside but in reality, they just lack the amount of vertical hinge needed so the club appears to be under the plane. Whereas, if you were to add the vertical hinge necessary, you'd be on plane.

If this sounds like you, try getting next to a wall and having your hands work in while keeping the club head outside the wall. Start to gradually hinge the club vertically. This will give you the perfect takeaway to set up the rest of the swing for success

If you have a tendency to take the club inside but your hands go "out" toward the ball and the club head darts "behind" your body (inside), then just do the same drill next to a wall! Feel like your hands are actually working in toward your trail thigh and the club head is gradually hinging vertically and staying outside your hands.
