Lou Whitaker’s No. 1 jersey will never be worn again and his name and number now adorn the brick wall of Detroit Tigers legends in center field at Comerica Park.
A near-sellout crowd witnessed the jersey retirement ceremony on Saturday night, a gesture that had been delayed two years due to the pandemic.
Whitaker, the Tigers’ second baseman from 1977-1995, is the eighth player to have his uniform number retired, joining Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Willie Horton, Al Kaline, Hal Newhouser, Alan Trammell and Jack Morris.
Trammell and Morris were Whitaker’s teammates on the 1984 World Series title team, and Trammell was Whitaker’s double-play partner for two decades.
“For four years, I’ve been uncomfortable,” Trammell said at the ceremony. “I’m extremely honored and grateful to have my No. 3 retired. But there wouldn’t be a No. 3 on the wall without No. 1.
“We were promoted to Detroit (together) and I guess you could say the rest is history. Can you imagine having the same double play partner for 19 years? It’s pretty incredible.”
Other Tigers greats and former teammates offered congratulations via video message, including Cecil Fielder, Tom Brookens Willie Horton.
Whitaker, accompanied Saturday by about a dozen family members, called it one of the great moments of his life.
