DRC joins East African Community

One of the topics expected to be discussed at the East African Community Heads of state summit on Tuesday is the ratification and acceptance of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the East African Community.
It is expected that the country will benefit a lot from this community as well as the EAC benefiting from DRC joining the block.
The total population of the EAC is estimated at 170 million, while the DRC itself has a population of over 90 million. With DRC joining the block, the EAC market base would increase to more than a 260Million people.
In surface area, the DRC is the larger other EAC member states altogether with an area of 1.8 million square meters compared to the 2.4 million square kilometres of the combined EAC member states.
Also joining the EAC means the block will border and have access to the Atlantic Ocean.
Economically, the EAC member states have a total economy of $ 193.7 billion, while the DRC alone have a GDP of $ 50 billion. This implies that DRC joining the EAC will increase its economy to more than $ 243.7 billion.
