This Letterpress Print Failed—So We Called an Audible - RESPECT THE SHADOW

In this video, we set out to print a new Groundhog Day piece featuring a hand-carved linoleum groundhog paired with metal type reading “Respect the Shadow.” The plan was simple: print the piece on Ms. Kelsey, our 3×5 Kelsey & Company letterpress.

But sometimes ink coverage, impression, scale, and pressure don’t line up—and partway through the run, it became clear the print just wasn’t working the way it should.

So we did what printers have done forever: we pivoted. we called an audible.

The print was ultimately saved—but not on the press we started with. You’ll have to watch to see which press stepped in and finished the job.

This video is an honest, behind-the-scenes look at real letterpress printing—the problem-solving, decision-making, and humility required when the process demands a change. Not every print works the first time, but every print teaches you something.
