J-Bay's Surfer Boat Rides Supertubes

The water safety craft got caught inside at Supertubes but managed to trim the wave, drawing a high line flawlessly until the end.

But who's the inventor of this new sport called boat surfing? The kamikaze captain's name is Oliver Tonkin.

He said the stunt was not previously planned and that he had never surfed a wave before.

Until this happened - a dinghy surfing through Boneyards, one of the heaviest sections at Supertubes.

Tonkin revealed that "that was the first, and hopefully last, time I will have to ride a wave in my boat. It was 99 percent luck."

Oliver and his partner positioned the boat in the same spot as in the previous couple of days. So, they thought they'd be alright there.

But then, the set of the day came through.

When Tonkin realized they wouldn't make it over the swell, he did the only thing he could do, which was ride the wave to safety.

The skipper later explained that his boss was yelling at him, but he couldn't hear anything.

Oliver Tonkin runs a tractor business that launches boats and is a part-time skipper.

He hails from Plettenberg Bay, a coastal town in South Africa's Western Cape Province. He also has training as a helicopter pilot.

But Oliver has no plans to give surfing a go.
