On Wednesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy hosted Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, a move that was quickly condemned by China.
Taiwan views itself as a sovereign nation, having split with mainland China’s ruling Communist Party after a civil war more than seven decades ago.
However, China maintains China that Taiwan belongs to it and condemned McCarthy's meeting as a violation of international agreements.
