This video gives you a close-up view of Iberian honey bees and their behavior as I approach the brood chamber.

🎧 Audio note: The sound quality isn’t perfect, but you can clearly hear the bees roar and react as I get closer to the brood area. I intentionally stopped short of a full inspection — today was not the day to push this hive any further.

🛡️ Protective gear is essential with this colony. I’m wearing a 3-layer bee suit, veil, boots, and using sugar water spray and a smoker. In my experience, wearing a veil is non-negotiable when working with this hive.

🐝 About these bees: This hive is colonized by Iberian bees, which in our region of Andalusia (southern Spain) are estimated to be around 10% Africanized. The African genetics were likely introduced decades ago to increase honey production — possibly deliberately, though accidental migration from North Africa (Morocco is only ~30 miles away) is also possible.
🍯 Pros & cons of Iberian / Africanised bees:
✔ Excellent wax production
✔ Rapid reproduction
✔ Strong defence against wasps and scarab beetles
✔ Varroa-resistant and very hygienic
❌ Extremely aggressive and difficult to handle
❌ Not suitable for backyard or garden beekeeping Despite the myths, I’ve found no significant increase in honey production, and personally would not recommend these bees for hobbyist beekeepers, especially near homes.
