The air at the foot of the limestone hills was thick with the scent of incense and the rhythmic, heart-thumping pulse of urumi melam (traditional drums). Long before the sun rose, a sea of yellow and saffron flooded the temple grounds. Devotees, many having fasted for 48 days, arrived to fulfill their sacred vows to Lord Murugan.
The 272 rainbow-colored steps became a slow-moving river of humanity. Pilgrims ascended with steady focus, carrying paal kudam (milk pots) balanced on their heads or bearing the weight of ornate kavadis.
Key Highlights of 2026
Refurbished Grandeur: The iconic 42.7-meter gold statue of Lord Murugan debuted a newly enhanced lighting system, making the deity glow brilliantly against the night sky as the Silver Chariot arrived from Kuala Lumpur.
The Silver Chariot: The 21-foot chariot, carrying the idol of Lord Murugan, completed its 15km journey from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, escorted by thousands of barefoot devotees chanting "Vel Vel Muruga!"
A Global Gathering: Tourists from Japan, Spain, and the US were among the millions, describing the atmosphere as "electric" and "shockingly beautiful."
Community Spirit: Beyond the rituals, the National Blood Centre collected over 1,000 bags of blood in a massive 36-hour donation drive held right at the temple gates.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
The most striking sight remained the Vel Kavadi bearers. In states of deep trance, these devotees carried massive metal structures attached to their bodies via hooks and skewers pierced through their skin, cheeks, and tongues. Despite the physical intensity, the atmosphere was one of triumph rather than pain—a testament to the victory of light over darkness.
Note for the Curious: If you missed the main event, the "return journey" of the chariot typically marks the official end of festivities, but the spiritual energy at Batu Caves lingers for weeks.
