📽️ About This Lesson
In Organic Chemistry, every molecule has two identities: its formal IUPAC name and its "nickname" or Common Name. While IUPAC follows a strict code, common names (Trivial names) are rooted in history and are still widely used in laboratories and competitive exams.
In this video, we master the art of naming organic compounds using both systems, focusing on the prefixes and suffixes that often confuse students.
📝 What You’ll Learn:
Mastering Common Names (Trivial System)
Prefixes you MUST know: * n- (normal): Unbranched chains.
iso-: A methyl group on the second carbon.
neo-: A quaternary carbon at the end of the chain.
sec- (secondary) & tert- (tertiary): Based on the degree of the carbon atom.
Common names for functional groups: (e.g., Acetone vs. Propan-2-one, Formic Acid vs. Methanoic Acid).
