Four-Flats, ADUs, and Beyond - How Abundant Housing Illinois is Reshaping Chicago

As the Illinois chapter of the national “Yes In My Backyard” movement, Abundant Housing Illinois advocates for building more homes of all types; from affordable housing and shelters to market-rate apartments and the classic Chicago four-flat. AHIL has racked up wins at every level: supporting individual housing projects through public testimony, helping pass Chicago’s citywide ADU ordinance, and advocating for state legislation that saved transit funding and eliminated parking minimums. Fresh off these wins, the group is championing policy changes aimed at making it easier to build family-friendly, “Missing Middle” homes, such as Chicago’s iconic 2-4 flats, throughout the state.
