On this date, July 24th, in Canadian history…
In 1967, during an official visit to Canada for Expo 67, French President Charles De Gaulle delivered a speech from the balcony at Montreal City Hall.
He finished his speech by saying Vive Montreal, Vive le Quebec, and Vive le Quebec Libre – Long live free Quebec.
The phrase was a slogan used by the Quebec sovereignty movement and caused a diplomatic incident.
It was condemned by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, and De Gaulle would end up returning to France a day earlier than scheduled.
