Q29 #askTanya: Why can my child say words, but still resist speaking or having conversations?
This is something I hear from many parents — and the answer is more complex (and more compassionate) than you might think.
🧠 Autistic kids often process the world through their senses, not language.
💬 Speech is demanding — it’s not just about motor skills, but emotions, timing, and co-regulation.
🌱 And if your child didn’t develop those early sensory-motor patterns of coregulation, the foundations for back-and-forth talking might not be there — yet.
Instead of pushing for neurotypical conversation, try meeting your child where they are. Trust their way of connecting — whether it’s verbal, nonverbal, or somewhere in between.
✨ Connection matters more than convention.
Let’s honour their nervous system, their rhythm, and their truth.
💛 You’re doing beautifully.
👇 Does this resonate with you and your child? I’d love to hear your experience.
