As part of the Academic Lecture Series 2025, Speaking From Margin hosted a conceptual lecture by Prof. Surinder S. Jodhka.
Surinder S. Jodhka is a Professor of Sociology at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His research focuses on social inequalities, caste, agrarian change, rural India, and the political sociology of community identities. His recent publications include The Indian Village (Aleph, 2023), The Oxford Handbook of Caste (OUP, 2023, co-edited with Jules Naudet), and India’s Villages in the 21st Century (OUP, 2019, with Edward Simpson). He also edited Mapping the Elite (OUP, 2019), A Handbook of Rural India (2018), and authored Caste in Contemporary India (2015) and Caste (OUP, 2012). He edits Routledge India’s ‘Religion and Citizenship’ series and co-edits OUP’s ‘Exploring India’s Elite’. He received the ICSSR-Amartya Sen Award for Distinguished Social Scientists.

Speaking From Margin is a student collective and academic platform for research scholars, social-political activists, and students to engage in contemporary discourses on social sciences. It attempts to build academic solidarity for social justice in higher education. We use this space to build solidarity among researchers from various marginal locations to engage with the evolving knowledge paradigm of social sciences. In our collective, researchers from SCs, STs, Minorities and OBCs participate to gain a deeper understanding of research methods, conceptualisations and theorisations in the diverse field of social sciences.
